Every digit in a number has a special position called its place value. The same digit means different things in different positions.

A symbol from 0 to 9.
place value:
The value a digit has because of its position in a number.

Examples

  • 1In 345: 3 means 3 hundreds, 4 means 4 tens, and 5 means 5 ones.
  • 2In 2,087: the 0 means zero hundreds.
