Spending and Budgeting
A budget is a plan for how to use your money. You add up what you have, subtract what you need to spend, and see what is left.

Words to know
- budget:
- A plan for money coming in, money going out, and money saved.
- balance:
- The amount left after money is added or spent.
Examples
- 1You have £10. You buy a book for £4.50 and a pen for £1.25. Left: £10 − £4.50 − £1.25 = £4.25.
- 2You save £3 a week. In 4 weeks you will have £12.
Check these
- • Do not leave out a cost or count it twice.
- • Keep every number, symbol, label, and unit in its correct place.
- • Show enough working to check how you reached your answer.

- • Read the whole question before choosing what to do.
