Types of Matrices and Transpose

The shape and entries of a matrix give it useful names. A row matrix has one row, a column matrix has one column, and a square matrix has the same number of rows and columns. A zero matrix has every entry equal to zero. The identity matrix I has 1s on its main diagonal and 0s elsewhere; it acts like 1 in matrix multiplication. The transpose Aᵀ is made by turning every row of A into a column, so an m × n matrix becomes n × m.

Your goals

  • ✓You can classify common matrices and form the transpose by swapping rows and columns.
  • ✓You can use square matrix, identity matrix, transpose, symmetric correctly.
  • ✓You can name the order first, then inspect the shape, diagonal, and zero entries.

Words to know

square matrix:
A matrix with the same number of rows and columns.
identity matrix:
A square matrix with 1s on the main diagonal and 0s elsewhere.
transpose:
A matrix formed by turning rows into columns, written Aᵀ.
symmetric:
A square matrix that is unchanged by transposing.

Examples

  • 138−1 is a 1 × 3 row matrix; 38−1 is a 3 × 1 column matrix.
  • 24004 is a 2 × 2 square matrix. 0000 is a zero matrix.
  • 3I₂ = 1001 and I₃ = 100010001.
  • 4If A = 257146, then Aᵀ = 215476. Its order changes from 2 × 3 to 3 × 2.
  • 5A is symmetric when Aᵀ = A. This is possible only for a square matrix, such as 2335.

More than one way to solve it

Try each method, then choose the one you can explain and check most clearly.

Method 1

Name the structure

Best for: Classifying a matrix quickly
  1. 1.Count rows and columns.
  2. 2.Check whether it is square, a row, or a column matrix.
  3. 3.Inspect the entries for zero or identity structure.

Example: [[1, 0], [0, 1]] is square and is the 2 × 2 identity matrix.

Method 2

Transpose by columns

Best for: Forming Aᵀ without losing positions
  1. 1.Copy the first row as the first column.
  2. 2.Copy the second row as the second column.
  3. 3.Check that the order changes from m × n to n × m.

Example: [[2, 5, 7], [1, 4, 6]] becomes [[2, 1], [5, 4], [7, 6]].

Check these

  • • Do not call a matrix an identity matrix just because it is square or confuse Aᵀ with A.
  • • Keep every number, symbol, label, and unit in its correct place.
  • • Choose the method that makes each step easiest to explain and check.

Helpful habits

  • • Read the whole question before choosing what to do.
  • • Show one clear step at a time and check each step.
  • • If you are stuck, draw a model, try smaller numbers, or revisit the example.

Now try your own

Create your own types of matrices and transpose example, solve it, and explain how you checked it.
