Determinants, Area and Scale Factors
When a 2 × 2 matrix transforms points in the plane, the absolute value of its determinant tells how areas change. A determinant of 3 triples area; a determinant of 1 preserves area; a determinant of −1 preserves area but reverses orientation. A determinant of 0 collapses the plane onto a line, which explains why the matrix is singular and has no inverse.
Your goals
- ✓You can interpret a 2 × 2 determinant as signed area scale and orientation.
- ✓You can use area scale factor, orientation, collapse correctly.
- ✓You can use |det(A)| for area and the sign of det(A) for orientation.
Words to know
- area scale factor:
- The absolute value of a 2 × 2 determinant.
- orientation:
- The clockwise or anticlockwise order of a shape's vertices.
- collapse:
- A transformation reducing a 2D region to a line or point.
Examples
- 1The matrix 2003 stretches x by 2 and y by 3, so det = 6 and every area becomes six times as large.
- 2A reflection such as 100−1 has determinant −1: lengths may be unchanged, area is unchanged, and orientation reverses.
- 3A rotation matrix has determinant 1, so a rotated shape keeps its area.
- 4The matrix 1224 has determinant 4 − 4 = 0; its rows point in the same direction and the plane collapses.
- 5For a triangle, transform its area by multiplying the original area by |det(A)|; the absolute value removes orientation information.
More than one way to solve it
Try each method, then choose the one you can explain and check most clearly.
Method 1
Magnitude and sign
- 1.Calculate det(A).
- 2.Use |det(A)| for area scale.
- 3.Use the sign to describe orientation.
Example: det = −2 doubles area and reverses orientation.
Method 2
Area of an image
- 1.Find the original area.
- 2.Multiply by |det(A)|.
- 3.State the new area with square units.
Example: A triangle of area 5 under a determinant-3 map has area 15 square units.
Check these
- • Do not use a negative area or ignore that det(A) = 0 makes the transformation irreversible.
- • Keep every number, symbol, label, and unit in its correct place.
- • Choose the method that makes each step easiest to explain and check.
Helpful habits
- • Read the whole question before choosing what to do.
- • Show one clear step at a time and check each step.
- • If you are stuck, draw a model, try smaller numbers, or revisit the example.
Now try your own
Create your own determinants, area and scale factors example, solve it, and explain how you checked it.
