Coordinates
An ordered pair (x, y) locates a point on a coordinate grid. Move from the origin along the x-axis first, then parallel to the y-axis. Positive and negative signs show direction.
Your goals
- โYou can plot and read points on a coordinate grid.
- โYou can use coordinate, origin correctly.
- โYou can move along the x-axis first, then the y-axis.
Words to know
- coordinate:
- An ordered pair, written (x, y), that locates a point.
- origin:
- The point (0, 0), where the axes meet.
Examples
- 1For (3, 2), move 3 units right and 2 units up from (0, 0).
- 2For (โ4, 1), move 4 units left and 1 unit up from (0, 0).
Check these
- โข Do not swap the x-coordinate and y-coordinate.
- โข Keep every number, symbol, label, and unit in its correct place.
- โข Show enough working to check how you reached your answer.
Helpful habits
- โข Read the whole question before choosing what to do.
- โข Show one clear step at a time and check each step.
- โข If you are stuck, draw a model, try smaller numbers, or revisit the example.
Now try your own
Create your own coordinates example, solve it, and explain how you checked it.
