2D Shapes

2D shapes are flat shapes. They have length and width but no thickness. Each shape has a different number of sides and angles.

Your goals

  • You can learn about flat shapes and their properties.
  • You can use polygon, vertex correctly.
  • You can count sides and vertices, then check side lengths and angles.

Words to know

polygon:
A closed 2D shape made only from straight sides.
vertex:
A corner where two sides meet.

Examples

  • 1Triangle: 3 sides. Square: 4 equal sides. Pentagon: 5 sides.
  • 2Rectangle: 4 sides (2 pairs of equal sides). Hexagon: 6 sides.

Check these

  • Do not name a shape only from how it is turned.
  • Keep every number, symbol, label, and unit in its correct place.
  • Show enough working to check how you reached your answer.

Helpful habits

  • Read the whole question before choosing what to do.
  • Show one clear step at a time and check each step.
  • If you are stuck, draw a model, try smaller numbers, or revisit the example.

Now try your own

Create your own 2d shapes example, solve it, and explain how you checked it.
