Simultaneous Equations
A pair of simultaneous equations represents two conditions that must both be true. Elimination combines equations to remove one unknown; substitution replaces an unknown using an expression from the other equation. Check both original equations.
Your goals
- โYou can solve two or more equations together when the unknowns share the same values.
- โYou can use Simultaneous Equations, model correctly.
- โYou can use the definitions, units, assumptions, and examples to check your answer.
Words to know
- Simultaneous Equations:
- Solve two or more equations together when the unknowns share the same values.
- model:
- A rule or representation used to describe a situation and make a prediction.
Examples
- 1x + y = 11 and x โ y = 3; adding gives 2x = 14, so x = 7 and y = 4.
- 2A line intersection is the coordinate pair satisfying both linear equations.
Check these
- โข Do not skip the meaning of a term or give a result without explaining what it means.
- โข Keep every number, symbol, label, and unit in its correct place.
- โข Show enough working to check how you reached your answer.
Helpful habits
- โข Read the whole question before choosing what to do.
- โข Show one clear step at a time and check each step.
- โข If you are stuck, draw a model, try smaller numbers, or revisit the example.
Now try your own
Create your own simultaneous equations example, solve it, and explain how you checked it.
